The easy-to-follow 24-page print booklet, which is now available to order in batches of 25, 50 or even 1,000, provides an overview of:
- The warning signs of debt: showing when to take action.
- How to get emergency help: where to find support in crisis.
- Scottish debt solutions (plans to pay off debt) explained: the options to pay off debt.
- Creating a budget: how to make and stick to a budget.
- Maximising income: tips to make the most of your money.
The guide is also available in Urdu, Polish and Punjabi in digital formats.
In addition, a series of five videos has been created covering the above topics, which are available here to embed on your website and use on your social media channels.
Established in 1993, StepChange believes that debt is not just an issue for individuals but goes much further - it damages families and communities and costs in excess of £8 billion a year. By helping those in debt get back on their feet via 24/7 free online debt advice backed by experts, and by campaigning for policies that aim to prevent problem debt, StepChange aims to overcome the difficulties that debt creates for our society in the 21st century.
Sharon Bell, head of StepChange Scotland, said: “Many Scots are still struggling to keep on top of bills and credit commitments, as essential living costs have soared in recent years. It’s vital that as many people as possible know that free and impartial debt advice is available to help those going through financial hardship.
“Our new debt guide provides useful insight around where someone can turn if they’re experiencing problem debt, what happens at debt advice, and what solutions may be presented to them to start their journey to becoming debt-free.
“We know that talking about money and financial difficulty can be daunting and can often be a barrier to people seeking help. However, debt problems can happen to anyone, and no one should have to deal with financial stresses alone. Getting help early can be hugely beneficial in overcoming debt problems quickly.”
