Poll: should people be forced to pay more to eat meat?

This poll is about 6 years old

A tax on meat could prevent 220,000 deaths and save the NHS £307 billion per year, researchers have said.

Experts from the Nuffield Department of Population Health at Oxford University have proposed a levy which would raise the cost of red meat by 14 % and 79% for processed meat.

As well as the health implications, it would also be good for the environment.

But as a society, are we ready – or willing - to give up on our hotdogs and rolls on square?

And wouldn’t taxing meat simply be another burden on those who can least afford it?

This is why we’re asking: should people be forced to pay more to eat meat?

Vote now and get the debate going by leaving a comment below.

Simply paying more for meat would increase profits to supermarkets and farmers. It would be better to reduce subsidies to farms for meat production. Less meat would then be produced reducing greenhouse gas along with (hopefully) habitat destruction and feedstuff crops thereby also reducing pesticide use. The reduction of animal production would invariably lead to a cost increase for consumers but give them a choice.
