The Scouts has appointed a woman as its leader for the first time in its 108 year history. Ann Limb, a former civil servant, has been appointed the organisation’s chair. The decision to appoint Ann was taken by the Scouts board of trustees who unanimously agreed the landmark move. Ann, the daughter of a butcher, grew up in Manchester’s infamous Moss Side district. She says her first move will be to grow the numbers of girls and young women in the organisation. Of 500,000 children signed up as Scouts in the UK, only around one fifth are girls.
