For some people, life in Scotland really is a nightmare. TFN highlights what you can do to help make life better for everyone
1. More than one in five of Scotland’s children are officially recognised as living in poverty
That equates to 210,000 people and is a level significantly higher than in many other European countries.
Check out Child Poverty Action Group Scotland to find out what you can do to help
2. 28,615 people were assessed as homeless in Scotland last year
Despite that there were 27,000 homes lying empty for six months or more.
Visit Shelter Scotland to support its work to end homelessness.
3. 117,689 foodbank parcels were handed out in 2014/2015
That’s more than eight times the number that were handed out two years ago.
If you want to set up a foodbank, the Trusssell Trust can provide you with plenty of support.
4. One in four Scots think people living in poverty do so because they are lazy
A Cyrenians’ survey discovered the shocking attitudes of some to Scotland’s poorest. The charity has since launched a campaign to change public perceptions of those who are struggling.

5. Children over the age of four have to wait up to 50% longer to be adopted
Children who enter care age five will wait more than three years to be adopted according to Barnardo’s Scotland.
If you think your family could provide a loving home to a child looking to be adopted, visit Barnardo’s Scotland
6. Nine out of 10 people in Scotland who experience mental health problems have experienced stigma and discrimination
45% of Scottish workers think that someone with a mental health problem would be unlikely to disclose it for fear of being discriminated against by colleagues.

7. Lung cancer kills 4,000 people in Scotland every year
That’s more than double the amount of any other cancer. Scotland is right at the bottom of European league tables, 27th out of 29 European countries, when it comes to five year lung cancer survival rate
Help make a difference to this through Cancer Research UK Glasgow Centre
8. Scotland has failed to meet its climate change target for the last four years
Scotland is struggling to meet its target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 42% by 2020. The latest figures show greenhouse gas emissions only fell 3.6% in 2013.
