Survey will explore what it's like to work in Scotland's voluntary sector in 2025

It will ask: what do you enjoy and value? What is less satisfying? How could you be better supported?

A major new survey sets out to uncover how people from across the voluntary sector feel about their work - from frontline staff and volunteers to managers and senior leaders.

It will ask: what do you enjoy and value? What is less satisfying? How could you be better supported?

The Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) 2025 Voluntary Sector Workforce Survey – conducted with partners Volunteer Scotland and Acosvo - will help explore how employers might improve working environments and strengthen routes into voluntary sector careers.

Kirsten Hogg, SCVO’s head of policy and research, said: “We last carried out a survey of the voluntary sector’s workforce in 2105. The sector has seen a lot of change in the decade since then, especially with Covid and new technology impacting on how and where we work.

“This time round we also wanted the survey to have a bigger focus on health and wellbeing, and also on diversity and inclusion. It’s important we hear from as many different voices as possible, so we can get a real understanding of what’s working well, and what’s not so great just now.

“How can the sector attract new people and keep existing workers? And how might organisations improve the working environment for the paid staff and volunteers that are the lifeblood of the voluntary sector?”

The survey is anonymous and covers a whole host of areas including job satisfaction, pay, career progression and wellbeing.

It is open till 8 August and the findings will be presented in the autumn.
