SMK Foundation national awards scheme will recognise top-quality campaigns and campaigners across the UK

People and organisations who stand up to fight injustice in their communities are to be honoured in awards.

The Sheila McKechnie Foundation (SMK), which provides support to grassroots campaigners across the UK, aims to recognise the impact of ordinary people who take action to change their society.

SMK was set up 10 years ago following the death of Sheila McKechnie, a campaigner who led organisations such as the Which? and Shelter.

In honour of its 10th anniversary it will present awards in 10 categories to organisations and individuals who have contributed to the environment, transport, health and other areas.

A special award is for women and girls who are demanding justice on international or national issues. The award is sponsored privately by a long-term supporter of SMK, a founding member of campaign group the Angry Birds.

Linda Butcher, chief executive of SMK, said: “The Sheila McKechnie Foundation was established in 2005 to inspire and support a new generation of campaigners.

“To mark our 10th Anniversary, we’re holding a very special awards ceremony at the House of Lords in February 2015, recognising campaigners and their impact across a wide range of fields, such as environment, transport and social justice."

To find out more about the awards visit the SMK website. The deadline for entries is 5 January 2015.
