Buskers unite for Social Bite

Glasgow’s buskers will come together this weekend for a street music festival to help break the cycle of homelessness in Scotland.

Help the People will take place on Saturday in aid of Social Bite.

Buskers will be situated at local landmarks, including St. Luke’s, Glasgow Necropolis and the Barras Market to form a walking tour for visitors to follow.

Each busker will have a QR code on display, which will allow spectators to donate money online to the cause.

There are currently 12 buskers lined up for the event, ranging from solo musicians to full bands. Glasgow hosts a wealth of local musical talent and event organiser Cameron Luan McGale hopes that these musicians will act as a portal to help those in the city who need it most.

Cameron said: “Glasgow is populated with beautiful, big hearted people who want to do their part to help. On a personal level, and as a busker myself, the city of Glasgow has provided me with so much. I just want to give back and help where I see the city is hurting, and I know that other Glaswegians feel the same.

“Live music has been decimated by the pandemic - and that’s caused many of us musicians to despair. But at least most of us can take solace in the fact that we have a roof over our heads. Rather than sit and fret, we’d prefer to be positive and do our bit to help the people who need it the most.

Social Bite rose to prominence with some of its major events including The World’s Biggest Sleepout in 2019, when 50,000 people throughout the world voluntarily slept outdoors to raise money for those who have no choice.

Josh Littlejohn, Co-Founder and CEO of Social Bite, said: “We’re really thankful to Cameron for organising Help the People, Help the People and choosing to give all proceeds to Social Bite.

“It’s been an incredibly challenging past 18 months for everybody and I’m sure Saturday’s musical tour will put a smile on many people’s faces.

“The money raised will help support those who need it most and help us continue to tackle the issue of homelessness across the country.”

Talented teen prodigy Mayah Herlihy (14) is one of the artists taking part. She said: "I’m really looking forward to helping raise funds for Social Bite who work tirelessly to help homelessness by providing much needed food, essentials and shelter. I know how generous the people of Glasgow are so I’m very excited and looking forward to filling Glasgow with music at Help the People Help the People!".

Help the People Help the People is free to all, but visitors are encouraged to register for a ticket to secure an event wristband and map. Stay up to date about the event on Instagram and FaceBook. Click here to donate to Social Bite.
