#NotByMySelfie campaign aims to highlight the plight of older people who spend life alone

A whole host of celebs are taking selfie-obsession to a new level by roping their relatives into a new craze – all in the name of charity.

Scots actor Brian Cox has joined the likes of comedian Jack Whitehall and Hobbit star Luke Evans in talking part in Age UK’s #NotByMySelfie campaign.

They have shared a photo of themselves on social media with their grandparent or a special older person in their life to show support for the millions of older people who are facing later life alone.

The problem of having no one to turn to is widespread with one in four (2.9 million) people aged 65 and over in the UK feeling that they have no one to go to for help and support.

It’s awful to think there are almost three million older people in the UK who have no one to turn to

With half of those aged 25-44 saying they have worried about being alone in later life, the charity is hoping the #NotByMySelfie campaign will strike a chord with all ages, and that as many people as possible are inspired to show their support by this simple action.

Other celebrities who have got behind the campaign include Stephen Merchant, Julian Clary, Donna Air, Lydia Bright, Brooke Vincent and Helen Flanagan.

Brian Cox CBE said: "It’s awful to think there are almost three million older people in the UK who have no one to turn to. Many of us take for granted the simple things in life that bring us pleasure such as sharing a meal, having a cuppa, a laugh or smile with someone. I’m sharing a #NotByMySelfie with my older sister, Betty, to support Age UK."

Caroline Abrahams, charity director at Age UK, said: “Our latest research reveals that too many older people are facing later life alone and this is only set to rise as the population ages, so we’re asking the public to join our campaign by sharing their #NotByMySelfie to raise awareness of the issue so we can continue to give millions of older people the companionship, support and advice they need. Truly, no one should have no one in our society, and together we can make sure that no one does.”

Age UK is urging people to get involved and support the charity by sharing a selfie of themselves with an older relative or loved one on Twitter or Instagram using hashtag #NotByMySelfie. People can also donate and Text2 HELLO to 70004 to donate £3.

Donations will support Age UK’s work by helping it provide companionship, advice and support for millions of people facing later life alone. For further information go towww.ageuk.org.uk or call 0800 678 1186.
