Charity app launched to report modern slavery

By developing the app a charity says people can report modern slavery in confidence

Reporting modern slavery will be easier thanks to a new app developed by a charity.

Anti-slavery group Unseen launched the app designed to recognise signs of modern slavery and enables users to report concerns in confidence.

The app includes a contact form and telephone number to report suspicions or get support. It also includes advice on the signs of slavery to look for including: physical appearance, psychological, isolation, poor living conditions and restricted freedom.

Modern slavery legislation came into place in 2015 making businesses report annually on the steps that they have taken during the financial year to ensure that slavery and human trafficking are not taking place in their own business or in their supply chains.

Andrew Wallis, chief executive of Unseen, said: “The National Crime Agency estimates that there are tens of thousands of people being held in modern slavery in the UK, trapped in situations such as forced labour, domestic servitude or sex exploitation. In reality, the number could be far higher.

“Traffickers are using ever-more sophisticated technology to control and exploit their victims so it is crucial that those of us combating modern slavery must innovate too.”

The Unseen app is available for Android, iOS and Windows App Stores.
