Gala shelved “due to current health concerns relating to large public gatherings and travel"

A major charity sector event has been postponed because of the coronavirus outbreak.

Hundreds had been due to attend the People’s Postcode Lottery charity gala at the National Museum of Scotland on Wednesday, where Sir David Attenborough was to be the guest of honour.

However, it has now been shelved in light of the escalating number of cases of Covid-19.

In a statement sent to attendees, the organisers said they felt they had to act “due to the current health concerns relating to large public gatherings and travel.”

It said: “This decision has not been taken lightly but I am sure you will understand that our primary goal must always be to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our guests and our team.

“The event promised to be a wonderful celebration of everything that we have achieved by working together over the last twelve months.

“I am sure you will share our disappointment at this news.

“Players of People’s Postcode Lottery have now raised £548 million for charities and good causes, so we really did have something to celebrate together.

“Although, on this occasion, we will be unable to meet in person our message remains the same – together we make a difference for people and planet.”

The 2020 Dream Fund winners were due to be announced on the night - but now oither arrangements are being made for this.

Guidanceissued by the Institute of Fundraising last week said that charities should go ahead with planned events.

However, it said they must stay aware of the latest government and medical advice and ensure contingency plans are in place.
