Charity-run care home in Greenock to close doors

The Greenock Medical Aid Society cited 'rising costs' and 'sector-wide challenges'.

A charity-run care home in Inverclyde which has been run locally since 1926 is to close following a board decision this week.

The Greenock Medical Aid Society (GMAS) announced it will shut Glenfield Care Home in Bedford Street.

As many as 36 jobs could be at risk, with 33 residents being moved to other facilities. 14 staff are being moved to another of GMAS’ care homes in the area.

Seven residents will also transfer to Bagatelle, some have secured other care homes placements and 'a few' are still be to allocated new homes.

The charity cited 'rising costs' and 'sector-wide challenges' as the reasons behind the decision.

A GMAS spokesperson told the Greenock Telegraph: “Following a month of much activity and making our case at the highest level, we unfortunately have been unable to prevent Glenfield closing.

“During this last month we have continued to lobby and had meetings with [our] local MP, local MSP, local councillors and [have had] a recent meeting with Maree Todd Minister for Social Care, Mental Wellbeing and Sport of Scotland.

“We have completed a 30-day consultation process with our staff team at Glenfield, with many of our staff obtaining employment opportunities in other organisations and 14 staff being transferred to our Bagatelle Care Home.

“We have worked closely with our relatives and the local HSCP [Health and Social Care Partnership] and many of our residents have already secured other care home placements with only a very few still to be allocated new homes.

“Seven residents will be transferred to Bagatelle.

“As stated previously the closure of Glenfield strengthens the financial viability and stability of GMAS allowing Bagatelle to continue and operate.

“GMAS remains committed to providing high quality care at Bagatelle into the future, as we have done for the past 227 years.”
