Outrage as foodbank is trashed.

A prominent anti-poverty campaigner has branded heartless yobs “evil” after trashing an East Kilbride foodbank.

Thieves broke into the food bank before fleeing empty handed.

Bags of food which were destined for homeless people in the town had to thrown away after they were burst open and their contents scattered and ruined.

Volunteers arrived at Loaves and Fishes’ storage depot in Kelvin Industrial Estate on Monday morning to discover the chaos.

Volunteer Denis Curran, a well-known local who runs the charity Loaves and Fishes and who has dedicated his life to helping others, called the act “evil”.

He said: “When I got a call from my volunteers to tell me we had been broken into, I just couldn’t believe it.

“I got here to find the place an absolute mess.

"Cupboards were ransacked and things were smashed and thrown everywhere.

“What kind of people break into a foodbank, wreck our office and destroy food which has been donated to help people who are in desperate need?

“It makes me wonder what the purpose of all our hard work is.

“They didn’t even take anything, I think they were looking for money but any donations we get go straight into the bank.

“I know a foodbank in Maryhill was targeted and they lost thousands of pounds, so in that respect we were lucky.

“All we had was 20p in a tin box, so they didn’t bother taking it.”

Curran added: “The sad thing is, if the thieves had come to us, we could have helped them, we could have offered them food.

“You have to wonder how desperate these people are that they would rob a charity,”

CCTV footage has been handed to the police who are investigating the incident.
