Changes in legislation for volunteers and organisations

Fife Voluntary Action (FVA) has unveiled resources to help volunteers and voluntary organisations in the region stay informed and prepared for significant changes to the law.

In response to upcoming changes in the law, Fife Voluntary Action (FVA) has taken important steps to empower volunteers and voluntary organisations with the knowledge they need to successfully navigate these updates.

The changes come into place on 1 April for PVG (protecting vulnerable groups) and Disclosure checks - a system that checks the suitability of people who want to work or volunteer with children and protected adults in Scotland.

By launching a guide and accompanying training sessions, FVA is providing an essential resource for individuals and third sector organisations to understand the implications of the new laws and how they can remain compliant while continuing their vital work within the community.

The new quick guide provides straightforward explanations of the changes, while the training programme, presented by Wendy McBeth from Volunteer Scotland, offers practical, hands-on learning to help volunteers and organisations apply the knowledge in real-world settings.

Particularly notable is the introduction of mandatory PVG and Disclosure checks for Trustees who volunteer with third sector organisations that provide services to children or vulnerable adults.

Kenny Murphy, chief executive of FVA said: "We understand that legal changes can be overwhelming for both volunteers and the organisations that rely on them. As these changes come into effect, it is critical that those who volunteer and organisations that manage volunteers are well prepared and supported."

Linda Watson, Head of Volunteering Development at FVA said “We want to make sure that all volunteers and organisations have the tools they need to adapt and succeed. In addition to the resources, we are available to discuss the changes, creating a supportive environment for community organisations in Fife.”
