Highland charity welcomes new board member

 

Inverness-based New Start Highland has appointed Alison Wilson.

Inverness-based charity, New Start Highland has appointed Alison Wilson, director of economic development and advancement at the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI), to its board of directors.

Alison joins at a crucial time for the social enterprise, which has recently opened its sixth Highland retail outlet and is embarking on several expansion plans at its site in Carsegate, Inverness. 

Co-chair of the Institute of Directors (IoD) Highlands and Islands branch, Alison brings over 25 years’ experience building relationships across private, public and third sectors. 

She specialises in developing strategic partnerships across the Highlands for UHI. Prior to this she held a range of economic development roles in areas including skills development and telecommunications.

She also previously led Highlands and Islands Enterprise’s Inward Investment and Business Engagement functions.

Alison said: “I am thrilled to join the board of New Start Highland at such a pivotal moment in its journey. Its work as a social enterprise supporting individuals and communities across the Highlands, is truly inspiring and I look forward to contributing to the continued success and growth of the organisation."

Since its inception, New Start Highland has supported 240,000 people furnish their homes through its furniture outlets, provided 30,000 furniture and starter packs to people exiting homelessness and taking on a home. 

With reuse being core to its mission it has diverted 10,000 tons of furniture and household goods from landfill back into mainstream use.

Eleanor Neilson, chair of the New Start Highland board, said: “Alison has a wealth of experience and knowledge that will be a huge asset to the team, and I look forward to working more closely with her in future. As we approach our 25th anniversary, we are on the brink of some very exciting expansion plans which I can’t wait to share more about.”

Alongside Eleanor and Alison, the board comprises of Calum Macleod, partner at Harper Macleod, John Todd, experienced chartered accountant and James Dunbar, CEO of New Start Highland.

James Dunbar added: “Alison’s appointment reflects a significant point within our development and journey. The skill and stability of our Board is an essential component in the success, vision and impact of New Start Highland.”
