Waverley Care’s Milestone centre began taking referrals in April.
A support centre in Edinburgh has been repurposed to care for homeless people who have been treated for coronavirus.
Waverley Care’s Milestone facility usually offers support to people living with HIV and hepatitis C, but an agreement between the care provider and NHS Lothian means it will now be used to provide interim care to homeless people who have been discharged from hospital following treatment for the virus.
Working in partnership with the NHS and the Edinburgh Health and Social Care Partnership (HSCP), the centre has been adapted to its new role with infection control measures and clinical support in place.
Workers have also been issued with full personal protective equipment to ensure their safety.
Those using the new service will be able to access a range of emotional and mental health services, while support from the Cyrenians charity will ensure they can access accommodation before being discharged.
Milestone began taking in referrals from hospitals in April, and Waverley hopes that in the coming weeks it can also provide support for people who do not have coronavirus, but who have vulnerabilities and ongoing health needs.
Grant Sugden, Waverley Care’s chief executive said: “Waverley Care Milestone has continued to adapt and respond to the changing needs of people living with HIV and hepatitis C.
“We are really pleased that we are able to support the NHS and the Health and Social Care Partnership to meet the needs of some of the most vulnerable members of our society during the Covid-19 pandemic.”
Waverley confirmed that it was still operating support services for people with HIV or hepatitis C during the pandemic. Anyone who needs support is asked to get in touch on 0131 441 6989 or by emailing contact@waverleycare.org
