They are at risk of being evicted
Tenants of a Skye housing association have been warned not to sub-let their homes to tourists.
The island has seen a huge increase in holiday lets on sites such as Airbnb, pushing up rental and hotel prices.
Now bosses at Skye and Lochalsh Housing Association have written to all their tenants warning they could be violating their tenancy agreement by using short-term letting websites.
If found to be in breach of their tenancy they could be evicted.
Lachie MacDonald, the chief executive of Skye and Lochalsh Housing Association, said: "The tenant's agreement is quite clear. Tenants can't operate a business from the property.
"We rely on the tenancy agreement between us and the tenant and that's what we will be using to correspond with them about.”
Analysis carried out for the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) earlier this year showed that there is now one Airbnb letting for every 10 homes on the Isle of Skye.
MacDonald added: "We're contacting the tenants to remind them of the obligations of the tenancy agreement. If they ignore this correspondence then the matters will be passed to our solicitors to take it further and implement the terms of our tenancy agreement.”
