How to make Self Directed Support work

A major report into Self Directed Support (SDS) has been launched by one of Scotland’s largest disabled people’s organisations.

The study is based on the experiences of members of Glasgow Disability Alliance.

It suggests ways in which the Scottish Government’s flagship SDS legislation – an ambitious plan to offer disabled people greater control over how they receive social care – can be better implemented.

Tressa Burke, chief executive of GDA, said: “Rights to social care, choice and control are essential for disabled Scots to live independently as equal citizens.

“Despite this shared vision, austerity means support has reduced to life and limb, and disabled people are languishing, isolated, till they reach crisis point.

“Investing in the right, empowering support can take our social care system beyond just keeping people alive, to helping our society thrive.

“Our report shows that the right support empowers disabled people to tackle enormous barriers faced, to build confidence and aspirations – to dare to dream.

“The positive outcomes have huge knock-on benefits for families, communities and society.”
