People will soon be able to donate to charity through Instagram.

The social media platform is in the process of developing a donation feature, according to the Third Sector website.

This would enable users to donate to charitable causes of their choice.

Details of exactly how the feature will operate are not yet available.

Facebook – which owns Instagram - and Twitter already allow donations through their apps.

A spokesman for Instagram said: "Instagram is all about bringing you closer to the people and things you love, and a big part of that is showing support for and bringing awareness to meaningful communities and causes.

"Later this year, people will be able to raise money and help support non-profits that are important to them through a donation sticker in Instagram Stories. We will share more updates on this feature in the coming months."

Facebook and Twitter are among other social media platforms that have allowed users to donate to charities and good causes through their apps.
