Televised fundraiser raises £15m so far for Cancer Research

Last Sunday’s Cancer Research live TV fundraiser has raised nearly £15 million so far for the charity.

Over 4.5m people watched Stand Up To Cancer live on Channel 4 as a host of UK and international celebrities took part.

The final figure could be significantly higher than this figure however as the charity is still to receive donations from fundraisers and events across the country.

Dr Harpal Kumar, chief executive of Cancer Research, called it an amazing campaign adding: “I’d personally like to thank everyone who joined us to Stand Up To Cancer this year – through contributing on the night, watching the show, buying our merchandise, taking part in our events and fundraising for us over the past few months.

“Thanks to the generous public, we are getting ever closer to our goal of beating this disease. Your donations will fund vital research which will turn breakthroughs in our labs into better treatments for patients sooner and help us save more lives.”

Social media was put to good use raising awareness of the event with hashtags #standuptocancer and #SU2C receiving over 125,000 mentions on the Twitter.

The event first ran in 2012, raising £8m for the charity.
