Mental health charity appoints three new board members

North Lanarkshire’s You Are My Sunshine welcomes some big names.

A North Lanarkshire mental health charity has announced three new additions to its board.

Gemma Fay, John Miller and Vivienne MacLaren are set to join the You Are My Sunshine (YAMS) board.

YAMS was founded in 2018 by former Scotland international Rhonda Jones, who is a watch commander in the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS).

She began the charity in memory of her sister Gemma who struggled with her mental health and passed away in her 20s.

After success in recent years more than 4,000 people now use the free support services annually at Newarthill library in North Lanarkshire.

Of those who have joined the board, Fay is also a former Scottish international goalkeeper who played over 200 times for her country, while Ms MacLaren is the current chair of Scottish Women’s Football.

Mr Miller is the former deputy chief officer of the SFRS, with all three bringing decades of experience to the board.

Ms MacLaren, a digital marketing expert, will serve as chair of the board.

Rhonda Jones told the Daily Record: “I could never have envisaged the support the charity would be offering when I first started the charity.

“However, in the past year it became clear that we needed to strengthen our governance and I’m delighted to have attracted John, Gemma and Vivienne, who are three leading professionals in their own fields.

“Their leadership, acumen and expertise will drive the charity forward and continue to help break down the barriers that sadly still exist around mental health.”
