The Scottish Youth Parliament contacted police after complaints were raised about sexual harassment

The Scottish Youth Parliament has called in police amid sexual harassment allegations.

It has said it will carry out a thorough investigation after complaints were raised about existing and former members of the body.

Police were contacted earlier this month after historical allegations were raised.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "Police Scotland has been contacted by the Scottish Youth Parliament concerning possible inappropriate conduct by some of its members and former members.

"Inquiries are currently ongoing to establish if anyone is reporting a crime.

"Anyone who wishes to do so or who has any information should contact Police Scotland.

"The reporting and tackling of sexual harassment is a priority for Police Scotland, with all complaints received thoroughly investigated.”

Buzzfeed News reported that the charity had previously carried out a probe into harassment claims, but had decided to refer them to police due to their serious nature.

An SYP spokesperson said: "Earlier this month, SYP contacted Police Scotland on the basis of a new series of historic allegations that we were made aware of on 10 November 2017.”

Following the report, former SYP chairman Jordan Linden said he was stepping aside from his role as a North Lanarkshire councillor.

“I’ve been cleared of wrong-doing already; the allegations are false,” he said.

“I hope the police will act against those who are spreading lies against me. I have stepped aside from the SNP until this matter is resolved.”

The youth parliament represents the rights of young people, with 32 MSPs aged between 14 and 25 elected to represent constituencies.
