Equalities secretary Angela Constance has said a clear message needs to be sent that violence against women is never acceptable
A debate is being held in the Scottish Parliament to highlight an international campaign against gender-based violence.
Ahead of a parliamentary debate in recognition of the United Nation’s 16 Days of Activism initiative, equalities secretary Angela Constance is calling for men everywhere to stand shoulder to shoulder with women in sending a clear message that violence against females is never acceptable.
She said: “If the reaction to #metoo has achieved anything, it is to shine a spotlight on men’s violence against women and emphasise that we cannot take our foot off the gas when it comes to gender equality and safety. Women should feel safe in every space they wish to inhabit – this is a matter of fundamental human rights.
“Tackling violence against women and girls is the role of every individual, community and institution of Scotland and to achieve this men and women must work together to create a better, more equal society.”
