Glasgow Against Closures held a march this weekend

A protest was held in Glasgow this weekend to call for community facilities to be protected.

Campaigners from Glasgow Against Closures gathered in the city centre to show their support for local services.

Libraries, museums and sports facilities were shut down when the Covid-19 pandemic hit last year and Glasgow Life, which runs the venues for Glasgow City Council, has said it lost around £38m of income.

Following a £100m guarantee from the council, Glasgow Life reopened 90 venues, but many more are still closed and campaigns to save them have been running across the city.

A spokeswoman for Glasgow Life said: “The £100m funding guarantee we received from the council in March has been fully allocated to reopening more than 90 venues across the city in the wake of the global pandemic.

“In May, the council passed a motion resolving that all Glasgow Life venues should reopen as soon as funding and Scottish Government guidance allows but Glasgow Life’s ability to open more venues is entirely dependent on more funding becoming available.

“We recognise the strength of feeling there is about venues without reopening dates, and we continue to make the case for further income which would allow us to open more.”

Glasgow Against Closures praised the turnout at the march and said they will keep the pressure up.
