Reshuffle at Age Scotland as new business launches

Age Scotland has launched a new business to oversee all its commercial operations leading to a major staff reshuffle

Scotland's leading older people's charity has announced a major reshuffle of its senior staff following a restructure that puts more emphasis on its commercial operations.

Former Age Scotland chief executive Brian Sloan is to take on the role of managing director of a new commerical entity that will focus on providing products and services for older people. These will include the charity's shops, its specialist training arm and the services currently provided by Age Scotland Enterprises, such as legal advice and financial services.

In a statement released just before Christmas, the organisation announced it is creating a new body to oversee its commerical operations.

It said: "These operations will now collectively come under one area of responsibility and it is proposed that a new brand identity is created for these commercial services. In bringing all our commercial activities together, we also have the opportunity to implement the highest ethical standards in any products and services we are promoting to older people.

"Age Scotland has a vision of a Scotland where everyone can love later life. Our mission is to help Scotland's people enjoy a better later life and our daily work is focused to realising that vision."

The move, which will also see the charity's existing deputy chief executive Keith Robson take on the role of chief executive of the charity, aims to boost the long-term sustainability of the whole organisation and help it meet current and future aims. Age Scotland said it wants to ensure all its business ventures are "aligned with our vision, mission and strategic aims".

Age Scotland is entirely independent of its English namesake Age UK, which was criticised in the media over the prices of some of the services it provides to the public last year. The charity robustly denied that its services are not value for money or created with the best interest of older people in mind.

From 4 January 2017, Brian Sloan takes on the role of managing director of the new commercial services entity, Keith Robson is chief executive of Age Scotland charity and Logan Steele will continue in his existing role as general manager of Age Scotland Enterprises.
