Scottish SPCA struggling to feed animals

The charity has issued an urgent appeal for donations of pet food.

The Scottish SPCA is urgently appealing for pet food donations as it struggles to feed the animals in its care.

Scotland’s national animal welfare charity is continuing to take in injured or abused animals during the coronavirus crisis.

However, as the charity’s nine rescue centres have been closed to protect staff and visitors, no animals are currently being rehomed.

Compounding the problem, the charity says fewer donations are being made while the outbreak is ongoing.

It has now launched an appeal for donations of pet food, collars and harnesses and disinfectant to allow its staff to continue their vital work.

Animal Rescue and Rehoming Centre superintendent Sharon Comrie said: “This is a very difficult time for us. Our teams are working incredibly hard to continue to provide the animals with the care they need and to maintain their routine.

“Our helpline is still operating and our rescue officers and inspectors are still on the ground rescuing injured and abused animals across Scotland. Therefore, we will still have animals coming in with none being rehomed at this time. It can be a struggle to keep up with hungry mouths to feed.

“Due to the uncertain times right now, and people not being able to leave the house, we are receiving less donations than usual. But, it’s not all doom and gloom - our animals are still receiving the care and rehabilitation they need. As far as they are concerned it’s business as usual.”

Ms Comrie said the charity was facing additional pressure because of fox cub season, and staff expected to get even busier when fledgling season arrives in the coming weeks.

She stressed that people wishing to donate items should not attend in person because of government guidelines. Donations can instead be made using the Scottish SPCA’s Amazon wishlists.

The charity has also published a guide on caring for pets during the crisis, which can be viewed on its website.
