Kilties programme launched with a flashmob dance event at Glasgow Central

The Kiltwalk is looking for 2,000 volunteers to help it run its children’s charities fundraising events this year.

Kilties, as they are to be known, will help organisers put on the series of four walks in 2016, starting with starting with the Glasgow event on 24 April.

Volunteers are needed in nine different roles including cheerleaders to inspire the walkers, drivers to ferry equipment and people around, and venue and information staff.

Organisers hope the volunteer programme can invoke the spirit of the 2014 Commonwealth Games Clydesider programme and similarly, Kilties will receive training, uniforms and branded Kiltie goods for taking part.

It’s a chance for people to make friends, gain experience and help raise money for incredible causes

Paul Cooney, chief executive of Kiltwalk, which is being sponsored by The Royal Bank of Scotland, said: “Kilties support the walkers on the day, have great fun, make friends and create memories that will last forever. Walks of six, 13 or 26 miles will be tough going but the Kilties provide invaluable support.

“It’s a chance for people to make friends, gain experience and help raise money for incredible causes, with every penny raised going towards Scotland’s children."

Cooney helped launch the charity’s search for volunteers in Glasgow Central Station.

With assistance from the competition dance team from Kiltwalk charity A&M, a flashmob (watch the video above) of already committed Kilties sprung to life under the iconic timetable boards.

The Kilties were also joined by representatives from the partner charities Aberlour, Yorkhill Children’s Charity, CHAS (Children’s Hospice Association Scotland) and Calum’s Cabin.

Among the appropriately named songs performed were Walk This Way by RUN-DMC, New Shoes by Paolo Nutini and Walking on Sunshine by Katrina and the Waves.

Lindsay Macleod, who has experience both as a walker, and a volunteer can’t wait for this year’s walk.

The Chieftan of the 2015 Aberdeen event said: “My initial involvement with the Kiltwalk was as a walker in Edinburgh in 2013. Every person I met was upbeat despite many having heartbreaking stories. Their optimism is contagious. Kiltwalk’s concentrated focus of helping Scotland’s neediest wee citizens was, and remains, irresistible.

“I’m proud to support and be associated with an organisation that ultimately improves so many lives.”

This is the first year the Kiltwalk has been underwritten by Sir Tom Hunter and the Hunter Foundation meaning 100% of sponsorship money will go directly to Scotland’s children’s charities.

Following the Glasgow event there will be walks in Aberdeen on 5 June, Speyside on 14 August and Edinburgh on 18 September.

Those wanting to be a Kiltie can apply on the Kiltwalk's website.
