The bikes were refurbished by young people at Kibbleworks.

More than two dozen children will receive a bike this Christmas thanks to young people from social enterprise Kibbleworks.

The Paisley-based charity saved 27 bikes from a council recycling centre before restoring them and donating them to youngsters at Arnwood Nursery in Castlemilk, Glasgow.

Each of the bikes was refurbished by young people who attend Kibbleworks to learn skills to improve their job prospects through vocational training and work placements.

Earlier this year young people at the social enterprise donated 45 bikes to Saint Vincent’s Hospice, which were sold on as part of a fundraising project. A total of 174 bikes have been donated over the last year.

KibbleWorks also sells refurbished bikes - at heavily discounted prices - to low income families, with over 250 bikes sold so far.

Mark Robertson, depute head teacher at the social enterprise, said: “It’s fantastic to see the work of our young people having a direct, positive impact on the community, and we’re really pleased that the children at Arnwood Nursery will get good use out of the bikes.

“The young people really enjoy getting the chance to take a scrapped item and bring it back to life, allowing the children at the nursery to enjoy something that would have otherwise been left behind.

“Cycling is an excellent way for people to stay active, and we’re proud of the work we do to help families to have fun together through our community bike shop and donations.”

Sandra Robertson, head teacher at Arnwood Nursery, said the donation showed the “spirit of Christmas”.

She added: “It reaches out to our local community and brings a little extra magic to families at a time of year which can prove difficult.

“We’re sure our children are going to have great fun on the bikes.”
