​Cover of Bridge Over Troubled Water will be available to download from Wednesday

Top names in the pop world have gathered to record a charity single for the victims of the Grenfell Tower disaster.

The cover of Simon and Garfunkel’s Bridge Over Troubled Water was organised by Simon Cowell, with Emeli Sande, Pixie Lott, Stormzy, Louisa Johnson, Rita Ora and Leona Lewis among those contributing.

Sande said: "It's really inspiring to see people come together. It gives you hope in humanity."

Cowell, who lives in the same London borough as the now burnt-out tower, called the blaze "heartbreaking".

At least 58 people are believed to have died and hundreds more made homeless.

Directed by choirmaster Gareth Edmund Malone and featuring over 300 participants, including local residents, the single will be available to download from 8am on Wednesday.

“Simon Cowell is from ITV, I’m from the BBC, and it felt like a really nice message about working together,” said Malone.

“Singing absolutely cannot fix anything, a record cannot fix anything, but we might be able to raise some money, we might be able to touch a few hearts. To be frank I don’t care what it sounds like, it’s just about doing something good.”

Meanwhile, an outpouring of fundraising efforts across various platforms have raised more than £5 million – and counting.
