The Citizens Theatre will move out of its historic home while work takes place

A theatre is set to move out of its historic home while the building undergoes a multi-million pound regeneration.

The Citizens Theatre will depart its premises in the Gorbals, Glasgow, for two years while it undergoes a £19.4 million revamp.

Work is due to begin next summer, with the charity set to continue producing productions and carrying out education programmes at the nearby Tramway and Scotland Street School Museum.

Artistic director Dominic Hill said: "The Citizens Theatre building is about to embark on the biggest changes to its physical structure in its 139 year history.

“This latest stage in our £19.4 million redevelopment project presents an exciting opportunity for a number of key landmark cultural organisations to work together in Glasgow. Our shared history of innovation and creativity makes it a great opportunity to collaborate with them.”

The theatre recently launched its We Are Citizens public fundraising campaign which aims to help raise £1.6m for the building redevelopment.
