Memorial would be positioned off A1

Peta, the animal rights group, has applied for planning permission to mount a memorial to pigs who died in a crash on a Scottish road.

The organisation has written to East Lothian Council following the deaths of the pigs earlier this month.

The pigs died after the truck they were being transported in when the truck they were in crashed and went on fire.

The group wants a statue of a pig alongside the words: “In memory of the pigs who suffered and died in a lorry accident at this spot. … Try vegan.”

Elisa Allen, PETA director, said: “For nothing more than some chops, this crash left animals suffering on an already terrifying trip, likely to the abattoir,” PETA Director Elisa Allen.

She added: “PETA’s roadside memorial can prevent further tragedies, including human ones, by reminding people to drive with care and spare a thought for animals by no longer eating them.”
