​Ed Bartlam's young son suffered from a brain tumour, leading him to put on the Big Brain Benefit to raise money and awareness

One of Edinburgh Fringe’s top promoters has spoken out about his son’s battle with brain cancer.

Ed Bartlam is one of the co-founders of the Underbelly, one of the Fringe’s main venues, and has now created the Big Brain Benefit to raise money for The Brain Tumour Charity.

Bartlam and his wife Lucinda noticed signs that something was wrong with their four-year-old son Alfie last September. An MRI scan revealed a large brain tumour and Alfie had to undergo over 30 sessions of radiotherapy in America due to the severity of the tumour.

Now in remission, Alfie has to have regular brain scans for at least the next five years.

The benefit will take place on Wednesday, 23 August featuring a line-up of comedians including John Bishop, Jason Byrne, Aisling Bea and Iain Stirling.

All money raised from ticket sales will go directly to The Brain Tumour Charity, and Underbelly will match whatever is made on the night, doubling the funds for the charity.

This event hopes to raise awareness of brain tumours, as well as collecting a large amount of donations for research into new treatments.
