Trump documentary released despite legal threats

The US president threatened to sue any cinema showing You’ve Been Trumped Too

A documentary described as a “blistering expose” of the battle between Donald Trump and a 96-year-old Scottish widow will be released next month after it was held back by legal threats for four years.

You’ve Been Trumped Too details Trump’s actions towards Molly Forbes during the construction of his golf resort at the Menie Estate in Aberdeenshire, as well as the local community’s opposition to his plans, against the backdrop of the 2016 US presidential campaign.

The film is a sequel to 2011’s You’ve Been Trumped, which followed Molly’s son Michael as he resisted Trump’s attempts to purchase his land for the resort. During the filming of that documentary, a construction crew working for Trump shattered a mains pipe leaving the Forbes family without running water.

When filmmaker Anthony Baxter returned five years later, he was shocked to find out that the pipe had not been repaired, despite promises from the tycoon. For half a decade, Molly had been forced to collect water in a bucket from a nearby stream and wash herself over the kitchen sink.

Baxter, who received a police apology after being thrown in jail for reporting the broken pipe, then faced years of uncertainty after the Trump Organization threatened to sue any cinema that showed the second film.

However, distribution company Journeyman Pictures has now acquired the film for a worldwide release over streaming services from 18 August.

Baxter says he hopes that as many people as possible see his film before Americans go back to the polls in November.

“You’ve Been Trumped Too is the film Donald Trump doesn’t want you to see,” he said.

“I believe the film’s release by Journeymen Pictures is an important landmark for freedom of speech, independent filmmaking, and, most importantly, the accountability of the rich and powerful.”

Managing director of Journeyman Pictures, Mark Stucke, added: “Given the times we are living in, this critically acclaimed film is more powerful and relevant than ever, and Journeyman is proud to be bringing it to the world.”
