Urgent plea to help as civil society Cop26 plans disrupted

Activists will no longer be able to use a crucial hub to co-ordinate activities

Civil society activists organising around the forthcoming Cop26 summit have been dealt a major blow.

It emerged this week that they will no longer be able to use a crucial hub to co-ordinate activities – and now face a race against time to find a replacement.

The cross-sector, 60-plus member Stop Climate Chaos Scotland (SCCS) coalition had planned to use the Kinning Park Complex as the main civil society hub in the run up to and for the duration of the event.

It is situated next to an underground station and is a 15 minute walk to the Scottish Events Campus, where Cop will be held.

It was envisioned that the centre would provide hot desks, office space, a volunteer hub, bookable meeting rooms and a social cafe space.

And in the run-up it was to be used to train volunteers and serve as office space for SCCS and for international visitors.

However, SCCS learned this week that vital refurbishment work will not be completed till December, leaving the centre unusable.

Organisers have now issued a plea to groups throughout Glasgow to help out to replace the lost resource.

Kat Jones, SCCS Cop26 project manager, said:We realise with short notice that it will be impossible to replace this all in one place but we can distribute our activities to different centres – we already have our work somewhat spread out across the city but if you have space you can offer to us for the whole of the two weeks of Cop and preferably for some events in the month of October we would like to hear from you.”
