The Scottish Open is helping Gillian’s Saltire Appeal and Maggie’s

Some of the world’s top golfers sported a flash of Scottish fashion when Tartan Friday came to the Scottish Open at Dundonald Links – all in support of local causes.

Players, fans and tournament staff donned a little piece of Scottish attire during the second day of competition at the prestigious tournament and shared their experience using the hashtag #TartanFriday, with prizes available for fans with the best tartan outfits.

In what has become an annual tradition at the Scottish Open, all proceeds raised as a result of the fun fashion activity will go to the tournament’s two official partner charities, Gillian’s Saltire Appeal and Maggie’s.

Previous Tartan days have seen sizeable contributions donated to local causes.

A star-studded field has gathered at Dundonald Links this week, including four-time Major winner Rory McIlroy, the Open champion Henrik Stenson, and American stars Rickie Fowler and Patrick Reed, with four days of play starting early this morning.

Tartan Friday is just one of many fun charitable activities throughout the week. Fans will also be able to support the chosen charities through a long putt challenge, photo booth and prize draws, before enjoying live music from the Red Hot Chilli Pipers on Friday night.

Gillian’s Saltire Appeal co-founder Les Ward, said: “Gillian’s Saltire Appeal is delighted to be partnering with Maggie’s as official charities of this year’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, and we can’t wait to see Dundonald Links swathed in tartan.

“The funds raised during the week will go a long way to improving and enhancing our properties in Largs and Millport, which we provide free of charge for cancer suffers from Maggie’s centres and their families to enjoy some well-deserved holiday respite, so we hope to see lots of people getting into the spirit of things on Friday and throughout the week.”

Maggie’s chief executive Laura Lee said: “It is wonderful for Maggie’s to have this opportunity. There will be lots of fun activities available for fans throughout the week, but we’re all particularly looking forward to seeing players, fans and officials donning tartan on Friday.

“The tournament provides a tremendous platform to drive awareness of how both charities help people live well with cancer, while also raising vital funds for Maggie’s Glasgow, so we very much look forward to seeing golf fans from Ayrshire and beyond involved in Tartan Friday – and of course getting the chance to win great prizes.”
