Discover how to get your voice heard in Westminster

How can you influence what goes on at the House of Commons?

From women’s suffrage, to equal marriage and climate change; campaigning, lobbying and working together to shape and influence the national agenda has always been a pivotal part of democratic engagement.

In 2014, then 14-year-old Lucy Gavaghan started a petition calling for supermarket chains to stop selling eggs which came from caged hens. A short while later, Tesco became the first to adopt the proposal. Similarly, 19-year-old Rhys Parker started an e-petition calling for a cap on youth car insurance, which was then debated in the House of Commons.

How did they do it? And how can you also get your voice heard at the heart of British democracy? UK Parliament’s outreach team has the answers.

How can you also get your voice heard at the heart of British democracy?

Working beyond Westminster, our outreach officers visit all regions and nations of the UK, to support schools, community groups and organisations to engage with the parliamentary process. Our free sessions offer practical advice and helpful resources to show you how Westminster operates and how you can get your voice heard in national decision-making - regardless of where you are in the UK.

Your voice is important and impactful, and we want to help you use it. I became Scotland’s outreach officer earlier this year because I have first-hand experience in growing an idea into a grassroots campaign, and ultimately changing the course of the national policy agenda; and I am passionate about showing others how they can do it too.

Our sessions are for all types of community organisations - from youth groups to housing associations to sports groups - and they cover, in depth, everything that you will need to know to bring an idea to life and participate in parliamentary democracy. From the basics of law making to expert campaigning workshops – we can tailor each session to cover your own unique needs. Our resources will support your group to focus on the issues which matter most to them, to develop solutions and learn how to influence MPs and members of the House of Lords, and make an impact on the decisions that are made nationally.

We believe that everyone’s voice should be heard, and so if you are part of an underrepresented group, we are particularly keen to engage with you and help you take part in the important conversations which are happening in UK Parliament.

So if there is something that you are keen to change; an issue that you believe should be discussed nationally, or if you just want a greater understanding as to how UK Parliament works: book a free group workshop.

Sessions last one to two hours. Room hire and refreshments can also be provided.
