A smacking ban is set to come into force in Scotland after years of debate.

The Scottish Government confirmed this week that it will back a bill put forward by Green MSP John Finnie which will move legal protection that allows parents to smack their children.

NSPCC Scotland has welcomed the move, saying it will give children the same protection as adults, but Be Reasonable – which is backed by The Christian Institute and the Family Education Trust – has said parents do not support the ban.

But will the ban stop children from being smacked?

It’s way past time for TFN to stop using the term ‘smacking’. Call it what it is - assault - and apply the same criteria irrespective of age. We are signatories to the UNCRC so let’s put it into practice.
