Trauma Skilled Approach (Online) - 17 24 April & 1 May 2024

Health in Mind

Trauma Skilled Approach

The Transforming Trauma National Training Framework sets out 4 levels of training for different parts of the workforce. This training sits at the Trauma Skilled Practice level for those with direct and frequent contact with people who may be survivors of trauma.

It is assumed that participants will already have knowledge at an introductory level about trauma through experience or previous training.

Health in Mind trainings are knowledge-based and give participants time to explore their understanding through discussion and reflection on their practice.

Aim

To be able to develop boundaried, safe and effective working relationships in order to support traumatised individuals.

The training will use the Trauma Informed Approach:

Know and understand about trauma (realise)

• Understand the potential for trauma to impact on a person's interpersonal, emotional and cognitive functioning

• Know the links between childhood trauma, adversity (Adverse Childhood Experiences) and the range of mental health diagnoses that trauma survivors attract

• Be aware of why trauma is everybody’s business

• Understand trauma survivors coping strategies (risks to self) as attempts to cope with the impact of trauma.

Recognise signs of trauma

• Understand the range of factors that mediate a trauma survivor’s response to trauma

• Understand the potential for people affected by trauma to experience distress when memories of the trauma are triggered by situations/circumstances/relationships that bear some similarity to previous trauma.

Respond to the trauma

• Explore the professional relationship including recognising where the experience of trauma is having an effect on a person's relationship with the worker and/or the service

• Know what therapeutic or psychological support is available and where and how to refer them on.

• Explore the trauma-informed principles, to support the reduction of triggering trauma related distress

Resist making it worse/ do no more harm

• Explore participants ability to tolerate being exposed to the trauma narratives

• Explore how participants own experiences and values might be impacting on the ability to hear and pay attention to trauma narratives

• Support participants to understand their own self-care needs.

This online training is made up of three 2¼ hour sessions with a 15-minute break. The sessions will be on three consecutive Wednesday(s) 17, 24 April and 1 May, from 1.30 pm to 3.45 pm each day.
