The new centre will offer a fun-filled environment for kids with disabilities and additional needs

A charity that run's a successful adventure playground for disabled children in Edinburgh is expanding across the Forth.

The Yard Fife officially opened its doors on Tuesday 11 October at the Argos Centre in Kirkcaldy, offering a safe place to play for disabled children and young people in Fife.

At its flagship centre in Edinburgh, The Yard has been providing creative indoor and outdoor adventure play opportunities for children with a range of disabilities and additional needs, as well as support and respite for their parents and carers, for the last 30 years.

The Yard recently expanded to offer play services in Dundee and Fife. Disabled children and their families can now drop in and play from 10.30am to 3.30pm every Sunday in Kirkcaldy.

Celine Sinclair, chief executive of The Yard, said: “We are delighted to be able to bring The Yard spirit of fun and friendship to families in Fife. This will cut down on travel time for families who are already using our Edinburgh service and allow us to reach even more new families who need our support.

"The Yard provides not only a safe place to play, but also a much needed sense of belonging and community for disabled children, young people and their families. We look forward to welcoming and working with lots more Fife families soon.”

Dunfermline dad Neil Muirhead, who attends The Yard with his son Nicholas aged four, said: “When we went along to The Yard for the first time, we had excellent help from the friendly staff who were happy to explain everything to us. This is a great place and my son loved it, which is the most important thing. New activities and toys are being added each week, so the kids have a ball and are always eager to return.”

The Yard’s expansion into Fife was made possible by funding from BBC Children in Need, People’s Postcode Lottery, The RS MacDonald Charitable Trust and The Christina Mary Hendrie Trust.
