Play dealing with issues faced by forces' children to run at international festival

Scotland’s armed forces children’s charity is putting on a play at this year’s Edinburgh Fringe.

This is My Life was commissioned by the Royal Caledonian Education Trust (RCET) and will run as part of a drama, music and dance showcase called [email protected]

The play follows the story of a young boy called Kevin, whose father is deployed with the Royal Marines.

Described as “witty, engaging and entertaining”, it deals with subjects faced by forces’ children such as separation, bullying, and making new friends.

The impact on a child or young person’s education can be immeasurable

This is My Life has toured Scotland’s schools since 2015, and has been seen by an estimated 15,000 pupils and staff.

RCET chief executive Colin Flinn said the invitation to perform at this year’s Fringe is a unique opportunity for the charity.

He added: “For the vast majority, growing up in an armed forces family is a very positive and rewarding experience, but where there is hardship at home and or frequent mobility and deployment anxieties, the impact on a child or young person’s education and consequently their life chances can be immeasurable.

“This is an incredible opportunity for us to shine the light on the some of the issues experienced by an overlooked and vulnerable young cohort of learners who deserve the same life chances as other young people.”

This Is My Life has performance times on August 14 and 15 at the Hepburn House Army Reserve Centre in East Claremont Street, Edinburgh.

Tickets are priced from £3 to £5 and are available through the Edinburgh fringe box office.
