How to challenge decisions - mandatory reconsiderations and other tactics

If you need to get a universal credit or other benefit decision changed, this course aims to gives you the essential tools to do it. To successfully challenge a decision, knowing what type of decision to ask for can make all the difference. This might be a mandatory reconsideration, a revision or a supersession. In some cases complaints, disputes or judicial reviews might be the appropriate course of action.
This course explains the jargon and takes a practical, problem-solving approach to help advisers identify the right way to get decisions changed and get processes unblocked, and so get the best outcome for claimants.
The course covers:
• Understanding the jargon
• When to ask for revisions and supersessions
• When mandatory reconsideration rules apply
• When to use complaints, disputes and judicial reviews
• Practical considerations and tactics
Note that this course does not cover decisions for Scottish benefits – instead see ‘Scottish social security - an update’ on 10-11 March 2020.
This half day standard level course will be delivered online as follows;
10.00 - 11.15 training session delivered via Zoom
11.15 - 11.45 break
11.45 - 1.00 training session delivered via Zoom
This is a practical course, delivered using a combination of trainer presentation, exercises and group discussion.
