This session will provide an opportunity for participants to explore how we can safely and effectively work with women who have experienced domestic abuse. Participants will develop an understanding of how we can work with women to help increase their space for action and help them to move forward. The session will look at what is meant by terms such as empowerment, person centred and trauma informed approaches in the context of domestic abuse and how these can be used to support women to increase their space for action.
Learning Outcomes
Greater understanding of the concepts of Empowerment, Person Centred and trauma informed approaches
• Increased awareness of the power that we have as workers and how we can minimise power imbalances
• Increased awareness of the benefits of reflective practice
Facilitator : Heather Williams is freelance consultant and researcher with over 20 years experience in the violence against women sector working at a national and local level in strategic and frontline roles providing management support and directly supporting women and young people in a variety of settings. Heather is an experienced trainer and facilitator, working in multi and single agency settings across the public, private and third sectors. As a researcher her work has included participative research projects and external evaluations of VAW services, including most recently the ‘It Shouldn’t Take a Pandemic’ report for the Glasgow Standing Group on Violence Against Women.
