Vicarious Trauma
This course is for those working with services users who have mild to severe mental health problems or who may be known to be survivors of any kind of trauma.
Course Outline
Vicarious trauma is the emotional residue of bearing witness to the pain, fear, and terror that trauma survivors have endured. Vicarious trauma may worsen following repeated exposure; exacerbated by presenting a calm façade whilst hearing repeatedly about violence. Sometimes it is known as secondary trauma. Vicarious trauma is not the same as “burnout”, which is job-related chronic stress that has built up over time.
Aims
To explore the participants understanding of vicarious trauma, its causes, effects and the ways for individuals and organisations to prevent it from happening.
• To explore the common responses when listening to explicit accounts of human suffering or trauma
• To explore all of the ways that the symptoms of vicarious trauma present themselves
• To highlight both the risk and the protective factors
• To understand the opportunities that individuals and organisations can prevent Vicarious Trauma
• To reflect on the reasons why do we do this work
• To explore and emphasise self-care
