Scottish Women’s Aid National Conference 2024
Scottish Women's Aid
SWA National Conference – Reforming Justice Responses to Domestic Abuse in Child Contact Proceedings: A Human Rights Approach
You are invited to join SWA and leading Scottish and international experts in law, justice and social work to explore and draw attention to the systemic issues at play, highlighting the need to reform justice processes in Scotland.
There is an urgent need to address the current failure of mechanisms across criminal and civil courts that lead to sheriffs in child contact proceedings having insufficient information regarding a number of critical factors including:
The criminal case details
The impact of domestic abuse on the child/ren
Evidence of attacks on the mother-child relationship
The risks to the child and the non-offending parent by the perpetrator.
The conference will explore this issue and will also highlight the implications of recent international human rights cases, and the incorporation of UNCRC to judicial thinking.
Our keynote speaker for the conference will be David Mandel, Founder and CEO of the Safe & Together Institute, and author of ‘Stop Blaming Mothers & Ignoring Fathers: How To Transform How We Keep Children Safe from Domestic Violence’.
